Over the past two decades, Catherine Hardwicke has directed just about every single genre you can image. From dramas like Miss You Already and This Is Us to horror with Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities to the teen vampire juggernaut Twilight, her credits are a testament to her versatility.

She is now turning her attention to Mafia Mamma, a comedy by way of action movie. In it, Toni Collette plays an American woman who leaves her broken marriage behind to fly Italy to pay her respects to her estranged deceased grandfather. Little does she know, she must take her rightful place a mafia don.

Cortland Jacoby sat down with Hardwicke to talk about working with Collette a second time, what the actress was like as a producer, and bringing the feminine into the Italian mafia world.
